Donkey's & Co. soaps are made in the old-fashioned way in Provence, a region rich in vegetable active resources, aromatic plants, essential oils, vegetable oils and also ochres and clays. In compliance with the Ecocert standards, Donkeys & Co. have developed four certified Organic and environmentally friendly soaps with 5% of Organic donkey's milk.

Donkeys & Co. Certified Organic Bar Soap - Sweet Almond Oil & Bay Leaf
Native to the Middle East, Sweet Almond Oil was widely used as a beauty treatment by the Romans. Extracted from the almond fruit, it moisturizes, softens and tones damaged and delicate skin. It calms itching and irritations of the skin. Donkeys & Co. have combined it with the essential oil of Bay Leaf, the symbol of immortality because it stays green through the winter.

This essential oil is effective in healing, against acne and fungal infections. It has a recognised antibacterial and antiviral effect. Laurel (Bay leaf) oil is an effective cleanser, antibiotic, anti-fungal and anti-itching agent. Compounds extracted from Laurus Nobilis have recently been identified as an inhibitor of human melanoma (skin cancer) cell proliferation, as well as inhibiting other human tumor cell growths such as amelanotic melanoma, renal cell adenocarcinoma, and breast cancer cell lines.

Donkeys & Co. Sweet Almond and Bay Leaf soap is therefore especially suitable for troubled skin suffering from eczema, psoriasis, bacterial dermatitis, acne, herpes, rosacea, it also helps prevent hair loss and it aids in the recovery of skin diseases.

Due to its invigorating toner and stimulating fragrance of bay leaf, Donkeys & Co. Sweet Almond and Bay Leaf soap is reminiscent of Aleppo soap, the famous hand-made soap of the old Orient.

After your bath or shower, make sure to place your soap in a soap dish that allows the water to drain and the soap to dry. If your soap remains in the water, it will melt and become soggy and slimy. Dry it and you can use it again.

Why Use Donkeys & Co. Bar Soaps
The basis for Donkeys & Co soaps consists of palm oil (extracted from the pulp of the palm fruit) and palm kernel oil (extracted from the kernel of the palm fruit), from sustainable plantations in Colombia. This Ecocert-certified Organic basis does not come from areas that used to be covered in tropical forest. This basis is very soft to the skin. Donkeys & Co. add Ecocert-certified Organic donkey's milk (5%), produced in France, and then, depending on the soap, they add other oils (sweet almond, shea butter) and essential oils. Benefits of Using Donkeys & Co. Bar Soap
Donkeys & Co. donkey's milk soaps do not dry the skin; on the contrary, they moisturise the upper layers of the epidermis. They give you all the benefits of donkey's milk, in particular the retinol with its tightening effect). It is very different from the milk of ruminants that have multiple stomachs; their three-day digestion time oxidizes the fatty acids and vitamins. As humans, the donkey has a monogastric digestive system. Furthermore, due to digestion by fermentation, the milk of ruminants has a very high bacterial load; donkey's milk has enzymes (lysozyme and lactoferrin) which are powerful anti-microbial agents.

Donkey's milk is very complex and very close to the woman's milk. It is rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, C, D, E), minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc...), trace elements and essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6). It contains a lot of retinol (vitamin A) which has a very significant wrinkle-fighting and tightening effect. Retinol also helps to accelerate healing and collagen production. We understand that it is especially effective on problem skin with eczema, acne or psoriasis. The skin regenerates more easily and thus eliminates impurities. Donkey's milk moisturizes and is recommended for early skin aging.

Donkeys & Co. Bar Soap are used for both face and body, for adults and children. The bar soaps, in 100 g and 25 g sizes, are moulded and presented in an original packaging that enables you to see and smell the product and provides complete information on the characteristics of the soap.

Problems associated with palm oil led Donkeys & Co., without renouncing their use, to buy Organic palm oil with Ecocert and CSPO-certification. Why?
Donkeys & Co. believe that palm oil (extracted from the pulp of the palm fruit) and palm kernel oil (extracted from the kernel of the palm fruit) appreciably improve the quality of soap, as they gently clean and nourish the epidermis in depth. They are indeed very rich in fatty acids, that have regenerating and moisturizing properties and in carotenoids, precursors of vitamin A, which protect and soften the skin.
Palm oil, originally from Guinea, has been used in cosmetics for two centuries and contributed to the rise of Phocean soap factories. Its use is not new since it was found in jars unearthed in Egyptian tombs over 5,000 years old. The problem has been the recent intensive monoculture of palm oil in Indonesia and Malaysia, two countries that concentrate 85% of the world production, which caused an ecological disaster: deforestation leading to disappearance of many species, pollution, reduction of biodiversity...

Substitute products such as coconut oil or soybean oil are not better ecologically, because these plants, less efficient, require larger cultivated areas.

Therefore, Donkeys & Co. decided to buy these products only from an Ecocert-Certified Organic producer, located outside Southeast Asia and, especially  recommended by WWF, Oxfam, and a RSPO (Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil) certified producer who provides only CSPO oil (Certified Sustainable Palm Oil). Today these are the labels that guarantee a sustainable industry and rational agriculture

99.9% of the composition is natural and 83% organic. Donkeys & Co. soaps are hand-crafted, paraben free, no EDTA. They contain NO synthetic colouring agents, no synthetic fragrance, and no synthetic preservatives. Naturally, Donkeys & Co. soaps are not tested on animals. These soaps clearly fit into the ethics of fair trade.

1% For the Planet
To offset the environmental impact of their business, Donkeys & Co. decided to join the 1% For the Planet association: Donkeys & Co. is one of the 120 French members joining this worldwide movement of more than 1,500 companies that agree to give at least 1% of their turnover to environmental protection associations. 1% For the Planet was created in 2002 by the manufacturer of climbing equipment, co-inventor of "clean climbing" and "alter-entrepreneur" Yvon Chouinard. 1% For the Planet has become one of the largest source of fundings for actions to protect the environment in the world. This is the only organization in the world to work that way. More than 42 million dollars have been donated since the club was created. This money was distributed to over 2,600 environmental groups around the world. (For more information:

Protection of Donkeys
Donkeys & Co. support Walter Golsteijn, installed in Gipcy in the center of France, in the Auvergne region, who does considerable work in protecting and safeguarding of donkeys. In 2007, this Dutchman created "Aide Aux Anes" (Help the Donkeys), an association aimed at improving living conditions of donkeys. He has just collected his 56th donkey. It is a shelter for abandoned, abused or retired donkeys. His Web site ( allows to realize the difficulty of the work and courage of Walter who relies exclusively on donations

Donkeys and Co. is also a donor to The Donkey Sanctuary in Devon (England). Founded by Elisabeth Svendsen in 1969, this foster home has treated more than 14,000 donkeys. This is the largest organization in the world for the protection of donkeys. Today they have 10 centres in the United Kingdom and mobile units all around the world: Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Mexico... Elisabeth has also created the EST (Elisabeth Svendsen Trust) to promote the approximation of handicapped children with animals. Dr. Elisabeth Svendsen passed away on May 11, 2011, at the age of 81. Her efforts are incomparable: in 2010, The Donkey Sanctuary has provided care, directly and indirectly, to 400,000 animals in 29 countries.
